Xabi Alonso reacts to Vinicius Junior outburst during El Clasico

Real Madrid took the spoils in the first El Clasico of the season, as they defeated Barcelona 2-1 at the Santiago Bernabeu on Sunday. Kylian Mbappe and Jude Bellingham got the goals for Los Blancos, who are now five points clear at the top of La Liga.

As per Diario AS, head coach Xabi Alonso gave his reaction to the match, as he expressed his pride at overseeing victory in his first Clasico as a manager.

“We countered the opponent well. We have worked with great conviction. The goal conceded is a loss for us and Koundé’s is half a chance, but we created a lot. I have seen the boys and the stadium enjoy themselves. There has been a very good connection. For the people it was important to see that their team could compete and win a big game. I have enjoyed everything. This project is just beginning, but connection is critical. And today I felt it.”

Alonso was also askes about Vinicius Junior’s reaction to being substituted in the second half, which saw him go straight down the tunnel – he did re-emerge later to get involved in the scuffle at the full time whistle.

“I don’t want to lose focus on what’s important. These are things that we will talk about. Within the great game that he has been, Vini has also contributed a lot. It is an important, deserved, even short victory. We had chances, the penalty… It gives us the feeling of a competitive team in big games.

“Within the squad there are different personalities. Now we will enjoy and, in due course, we will talk in the dressing room.”

Alonso delighted with Bellingham performance

Alonso also spoke specifically on Bellingham, who was a standout performer for Real Madrid.

“He has played three very good games. We knew that before the last break he needed time, minutes, to get going. It went better than we expected after the last break. Jude is about sensations, transmitting and engaging. That’s why he played very good games.”
