´I´m not that kind of coach´ – Flick will not change his philosophy despite worrying results – Soccer News

Hansi Flick insists Barcelona will not change their playing philosophy despite dropping points to Club Brugge in the Champions League.

Barcelona’s often-discussed defensive frailties came to the fore once again on Wednesday, when they fought back to secure a frantic 3-3 draw at the Jan Breydelstadion.

It was end-to-end action from start to finish as Brugge took an unexpected lead from a counter-attack finished by Nicolo Tresoldi just six minutes in, though Ferran Torres levelled the scores two minutes later.

Carlos Forbs coolly restored Brugge’s lead 17 minutes in, once again on the counter, before Lamine Yamal drew Barca level after a brilliant dribble and one-two with Fermin Lopez.

Brugge broke through the visitors’ high line again two minutes later via Forbs, who once more slotted past Wojciech Szczesny, but Flick’s side were fortunate to secure a point as Christos Tzolis inadvertently turned Yamal’s curling cross into his own net in the 77th minute.

Barcelona, though, have now conceded in each of their last nine games in all competitions (14 goals in total) – their worst run without a clean sheet since March 2013 (13 games, 21 goals conceded).

Reflecting on familiar defensive struggles, Flick asserted that Barcelona will not change their style.

“It wasn’t easy. We created chances, they played very well. They were aggressive, as we expected,” he said in his post-match press conference.

“We are Barca, and we want to play our football. We can talk about changing everything, but I’m not that kind of coach.

“We will play according to our DNA. We won’t defend in our own half and play on the counter-attack to win 1-0.

“We can defend the final third or continue with our philosophy. We will do things better.”

Barcelona conceded twice inside the opening 16 minutes and 35 seconds against Brugge – the earliest they have ever gone two goals down in a Champions League match.

When asked about where his side went wrong, Flick pointed to a lack of intensity in the midfield.

“The midfield didn’t press enough. We lost possession too often, and it wasn’t easy for the defensive line to defend against their quick attacks,” he said.

“But the back line needs to be better. When there’s no intensity, you have no chance in the Champions League.”

The German also admitted that his side are struggling to maintain their famed offside trap this season, with many opponents finding creative ways to bypass it.

“Last year, when you saw the offside goals, they were by a meter or two. This year we’re struggling, we’re suffering.

“But there were no excuses; we played with the same starting eleven. Everyone knows we’re not at our best, but I always try to be positive.

“Maybe after the break, Raphinha, Joan Garcia, and Pedri will be back, and [Dani] Olmo and [Robert] Lewandowski will be at another level.”
