Barcelona President defends ticket prices – ‘They are appropriate’
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Barcelona will return to Spotify Camp Nou this weekend, but only for the season ticket-holders and the rich. The Blaugrana have faced backlash for the pricing of their match with Athletic Club, but President Joan Laporta has said that he feels the prices are fair.

Their return will come 909 days after leaving Camp Nou, during which they have played the vast majority of games at Montjuic. Nearly a year after they were due to be back, Barcelona will finally play in  their home ground again in front of 45,400 fans.

“It’s a very special feeling. I’m really looking forward to coming back. It will be historic. The home advantage will be very important. It will be a wonderful moment. The weight of it has not lifted yet. We’re fighting for the 1C license,” Laporta told RAC1.

Laporta defends €589 ticket prices

Barcelona have faced criticism on two fronts after releasing tickets for the match; for the exorbitant prices of the match, and for not allocating any tickets to Athletic Club. Laporta went on to explain that the prices will come down when the stadium capacity increases to 60,000, which the club have claimed will be this season.

“As we increase capacity, ticket prices will decrease. It’s important to remember that season tickets are still the cheapest in Europe. Keep in mind that this will be a historic event, and prices are slightly higher than usual. These are the prices Those with season passes have made the biggest profit. We will adjust the ratio between season ticket holders and the general public. We aim for 60,000 spectators before the end of the year.”

The cheapest tickets on general sale will be €199, while the most expensive are as high as €589, without being VIP tickets. However Laporta assured that the prices were fair in today’s market.

“Based on our research, these are the prices we felt were appropriate. They’re slightly above average. Members can get them starting at €159. It’s a historic moment. And for the 24,000 season ticket holders, the Main Stand costs €52 per match, and a corner or goal end ticket is €20.”

Laporta optimistic over Champions League return

The Catalan giants may still have games left to play at Montjuic though. They must be granted UEFA approval in order to change stadium during the league phase of the Champions League, but Laporta was optimistic that they would return in time for their next clash against Eintracht Frankfurt on the ninth of December.

“We’ll soon know if UEFA will allow us to play the Champions League at Camp Nou. The issue is that hosting away fans is mandatory in the Champions League, and we’re working on that. I’m optimistic and hope we can play against Eintracht Frankfurt at the Spotify Arena.”

Are Laporta’s claims fair?

Last season the most expensive tickets for Athletic Club at home were €260, and while Laporta does have a point that it is an historic event, the prices do not correspond to recent matches. For instance, El Clasico, undoubtedly the most sought-after fixture in Spain, had prices starting from €135.

It is also true that Barcelona have a reduced capacity to work with, but the visit of Liverpool – a once-in-a-lifetime event in all likelihood – in the Champions League to Girona saw their Catalan neighbours with a capacity of just 11,000. Even so, their prices for the match ranged €95-136. Even the 2024 Champions League final saw the cheapest seats at €70, which were to be distributed by the club, but sold their general sale tickets at €186, €500 and €710.
