Arsenal plotting January move for Barcelona defensive target

Barcelona will be looking to sign at least one central defender in 2026, although their finances will depend who they go for. Given that a Robert Lewandowski replacement would also be needed, it may be that the Catalans opt for a low-cost option – and that is where Luiz Benedetti could come in.

At 19, Benedetti would be a player for the future, but he would also be a perfect profile for the first team, given that he is left-sided. Barcelona have received positive reports on the Palmeiras man, so it would be no surprise if a move was made – especially as he may not need to be registered with La Liga.

However, there is a chance that Barcelona miss their chance to sign Benedetti, as CaughtOffside have reported that Arsenal are eyeing a move for the teenager during the winter transfer window. The Premier League side are said to have monitored the young Brazilian “for a long time”.

Benedetti could be an excellent market opportunity

It is clear that Barcelona could struggle to sign a proper replacement for the recently-departed Inigo Martinez, especially given that nothing was done after he left for Al-Nassr in August. And with a new number nine also needed, it would be no surprise to see the Catalans spend big in that area, before looking for a market opportunity in defence – and Benedetti could fit the bill in that regard.

There is still plenty of time to go until the winter transfer window opens in January, so Barcelona can wait to make a definitive decision about their interest in Benedetti. Much could also depend on how their current centre-backs get on during the first half of the season – so far they’ve struggled, but there is a long way to go until the market re-opens for business.
