Atletico Madrid set sights on shock move for Barcelona star
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Barcelona have started thinking about their transfer business for next summer, both in terms of arrivals and exits. Their plan is to sign a new striker, as it is almost taken for granted that Robert Lewandowski will depart when his contract expires in June.

Lewandowski, who has got on Barcelona’s bad side this week, has been a fantastic servant for the Catalan side since his 2022 move from Bayern Munich, but now that he is 37, he is reaching the end of his time at the club. Hansi Flick has already appeared to have starting phasing him out of the starting line-up, with Ferran Torres having been prioritised for the most part.

Lewandowski has been linked with numerous clubs in recent months, most notably ones in Saudi Arabia. However, he could remain in La Liga, as reports in Poland (via Sport) have claimed that Atletico Madrid would be interested in signing him as a free agent.

Atleti have signed a number of players from Barcelona in recent years, and they have history for bringing in aging strikers from Catalonia – such as a certain Luis Suarez, who helped Los Colchoneros win La Liga back in 2021.

Lewandowski wants to stay in Europe

Although there has been a lot of interest shown from Saudi Arabia and the MLS, Lewandowski is reportedly planning to continue his career in Europe. His priority is to remain at Barcelona, but if a contract offer does not come his way, he will be forced to seek a new club just before turning 38 in August.

Atleti may well take a chance on Lewandowski, given that they are likely to be in the market for a new striker in 2026. Alexander Sorloth has been regularly linked with an exit, and an ideal replacement could be the veteran Polish striker.
