In a recent report, journalist Mark Brus mentioned that Barcelona are facing stiff competition for Liverpool forward Darwin Nunez this summer. It has been revealed that the Catalan club would have to rival AC Milan, Al Hilal and Al Nassr in pursuit of the Uruguay international.
Nunez’s Impressive Run Of Form In The Premier League
Nunez struggled to find consistency with his performances as the spearhead of Liverpool‘s attack in the previous campaign. The Uruguayan talent was involved in 47 matches for the Reds last season, scoring seven times and earning seven assists in multiple competitions.
The 26-year-old did well to average 2.7 shots per 90 minutes in the Premier League. He kept 38.2% of his attempts on target. However, Nunez needs to find a way to improve his ball distribution after completing 70.9% of his attempted passes in the English first division (stats via fbref.com).
His current contract at the Merseyside club will run out in the summer of 2028 which could make it difficult for Barcelona to sign him on a cut-price deal this off-season.
Should Barcelona Boss Hansi Flick Snap Nunez Up This Summer?
Nunez excels at finding a yard of space for himself to get some shots in at goal. He can be a streaky goal-scorer in the final third and can engineer the odd chance for others around him up top.
The South American talent is a powerful runner with the ball. However, he has been far from consistent in the Premier League and could benefit from a change of scenery this summer.
Nunez is primarily a centre-forward but can also fill in as a left-sided wide player if asked to do so by his manager. We can expect him to bring more firepower to Barcelona boss Hansi Flick’s attack. He is good enough to serve as an ideal understudy to Robert Lewandowski at the Catalan club.
At 26, Nunez has his peak years ahead of him which makes him a decent choice for Barca to consider in this transfer window. He might also help the Catalan club challenge for some major silverware over the next few years. Thus, it is only logical for Flick to snap Nunez up ahead of the new La Liga campaign.
