Ahead of next summer, one of the big decisions Barcelona need to make involves Robert Lewandowski and his future at the club. The Polish striker sees his current contract expire next June, meaning that this season could be his latest in the Blaugrana colours.
Despite being 37 years of age, Lewandowski continues to show a fantastic goalscoring level. He has scored four times in La Liga this season despite having only made three saves (seven appearances in total), although it is natural that his successor is being thought about, considering his age.
Recent comments from Deco had hinted that Lewandowski could remain at the club until at least 2027, but according to Sport, it has already been decided that the veteran striker will not be offered a new contract, meaning that he would depart upon the expiry of his current deal next June.
His age, his drop in performance, as well as the fact that he can no longer press the opponent at the pace that the rest of his teammates are the reasons that Barcelona officials have come up with, which ultimately means that Lewandowski is not expected to be offered a renewal before his current deal is up.
Who will Barcelona sign as Lewandowski’s replacement?
Ferran Torres would be the only striker option at Hansi Flick’s disposal if/when Lewandowski leaves, so Barcelona would need to secure a replacement. They have a lot of interest in Atletico Madrid’s Julian Alvarez, but according to the report, it is more likely that Karl Etta Eyong is signed, as the idea would be to bring in a younger profile that can provide immediate competition.
It makes sense for Barcelona to prioritise Etta Eyong over Alvarez, given that they would likely not have the funds at their disposal to sign the latter, given that he would cost in excess of €100m.
