Barcelona are not expected to do much business in January, but there are in-house situations that need to be resolved in the shape of contract renewals. Frenkie de Jong sealed his last week, and soon, others are expected to follow in his footsteps.
One player whose contract expires next summer is Eric Garcia, who has been a vital player for Barcelona so far this season. The versatile defender is keen to stay, and barring any shocks, he will sign a new deal in the coming weeks. And now it has been decided whose situation will be addressed after.
As per Sport, Barcelona sporting director Deco will open talks with Ferran Torres once Eric’s renewal has been finalised. The 25-year-old, who has been Hansi Flick’s starting striker this season, is currently contracted until 2027, although the plan is to tie him down to a longer deal as soon as possible.
Given that Robert Lewandowski is expected to leave Barcelona when his own contract expires next summer, Ferran will take on even more importance from the 2026-27 season onwards. There are plans for a new striker to be signed, but the Spain international will still hold the jersey – especially if a big-name signing is not made, such as Atletico Madrid’s Julian Alvarez.
Ferran deserves a new deal after turning around his fortunes
It’s easy to forget that prior to last season, Ferran had been in a somewhat lowly position at Barcelona. His performance levels were not of the required standard, and he had been regularly linked with a return to the Premier League, where the Catalans signed him from Manchester City.
Now, he is very important to Flick, and there are chances for him to remain as Barcelona’s starting number nine even when Lewandowski returns from a hamstring injury in around a month’s time.
