De Jong decides: Barca midfielder reveals stance over

Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong has confirmed his intention to sign a new deal with the club.

De Jong has been linked with a move away on a number of occasions during his six-year stay with the Catalan giants.

Manchester United are among the Premier League clubs that have previously shown an interest, but the Dutchman ultimately resisted any transfer temptation in favour of staying put in Barcelona.

De Jong has now entered the final 12 months of his contract, raising the possibility that he could depart at the end of the 2025-26 season.

De Jong ready to sign new Barcelona contract

However, the 28-year-old has no intention of leaving the club, insisting that he is planning to put pen to paper on a new deal. 

“I have not renewed my contract, otherwise you would have known,” De Jong told reporters on Thursday. 

“But I am very happy at Barca and from what I know, Barca are happy with me so, in the end, I will renew.”

The Netherlands international looks set to become the latest member of Hansi Flick’s squad to commit his future to the Blaugrana.

A recent report claimed that Jules Kounde has reached an agreement over a new deal to keep him at the club until 2030.  

Pedri, Gavi, Pau Cubarsi, Raphinha, Lamine Yamal and Wojciech Szczesny are also among those who have signed new deals in 2025. 

How important is De Jong to Barcelona?

De Jong was by no means a guaranteed starter in Flick’s first season in charge, settling for nine starts in 26 La Liga appearances. 

The midfielder was at least trusted more in the Champions League, where he made eight starts in 13 matches in Barcelona’s journey to the semi-final.

De Jong will face greater competition in the upcoming campaign, with Marc Bernal back in the fold after missing most of last season with a serious knee injury.

With that said, De Jong should still gain enough game time to keep him satisfied, with Barcelona looking to challenge for all four available trophies.

The midfielder also offers the squad valuable experience, as well as having an important leadership role as one of the club’s captains.
