Real Madrid have been at the centre of a referee storm over the last few weeks, and it shows no sign of stopping any time soon. The defending La Liga champions have felt wronged over multiple decisions that they believe have gone against them unjustly.
The uproar started earlier this week during Real Madrid’s defeat at Espanyol, where Carlos Romero was considered fortunate to avoid a red card for a wild challenge on Kylian Mbappe. To make matters worse for Los Blancos, the defender would go on to score the winning goal at the RCDE Stadium. On the back of this, the club sent a strong-worded letter to the Spanish Football Federation criticising the refereeing collective in Spanish football.
This sparked a lot of debate, and many voiced their concerns about the measures taken by Real Madrid. Mallorca midfielder Dani Rodriguez has also reacted against this during a recent interview on Radio Marca Baleares (via Relevo).
“The rule is: ‘Don’t make a mistake against Real Madrid’. They are those who have the least right to complain. We have to support the refereeing collective.”
Rodriguez also spoke on the red card given to Jude Bellingham against Osasuna last weekend, for which the Real Madrid superstar has received a two-match suspension. The English midfielder claimed that his remarks were lost in translation, although that did not save him from being sanctioned.
“The sanction was what was expected, I watched the game and I don’t fully understand what he said. That’s why I’m studying English.”
Rodriguez has been involved in heated battles with Real Madrid in recent years, and his words come 24 hours after those of Mallorca teammate Pablo Maffeo, who was very critical of Bellingham.
