Girona confirm signing of former Barcelona player – Football España

Girona have had an underwhelming campaign up until now, although they are working to ensure that they can return to Europe next season. Michel Sanchez’s side, who have lost their last four matches across all competitions, are aiming to return to winning ways when they host Las Palmas on Monday, but before then, they have confirmed their first signing of the winter transfer window.

Last summer, Girona failed to replace talismanic midfielder Aleix Garcia, who headed to Germany to join reigning Bundesliga champions Bayer Leverkusen. That decision has cost them in the opening half of the season, but they have now made their move in January.

On Saturday, it was confirmed by Girona that they had completed the signing of Arthur Melo from Juventus. The Brazilian midfielder, who already has experience of Spanish football after two years at Barcelona, has joined on a loan deal until the end of the season, although it is yet to be determined whether there is an option for the move to be made permanent in the summer.

Girona registered their interest in Arthur earlier this week, and they have moved quickly to secure his services for the remainder of the season. He bolsters Michel’s options in midfield, joining the likes of Yangel Herrera, Ivan Martin and Donny van de Beek.

Arthur has yet to make a single appearance this season, such was his low prominence at Juventus. However, if Girona can bring him back to the level that he has shown at stages over the last few years, it would be an excellent addition to their European place-chasing squad.

It will be interesting to see how Girona get on for the remainder of the season, now that they no longer have to juggle their involvements in La Liga and the Champions League. They have the squad to make a push for the top six, but it will be tough.
