Girona humiliated at home, Villarreal and Sevilla pick up important wins

There was five matches played in La Liga on Saturday, as MD5 of the 2025-26 season continued for the 20 clubs involved. Real Madrid took on Espanyol, while also in action were Girona, Levante, Villarreal, Osasuna, Alaves, Girona, Valencia and Athletic Club.

Girona thrashed at home as Levante secure memorable win

Girona remain rooted to the bottom of La Liga after a 4-0 home thumping at the hands of Levante. The Catalans had Axel Witsel sent off on the half hour mark for a second yellow card, before in-form striker Karl Etta Eyong netted for the visitors. And it would get worse for Michel Sanchez’s side as Vitor Reis was also dismissed one minute into the second period.

From there, it was comfortable for Levante, as Carlos Alvarez, Ivan Romero and Goduine Koyalipou scored to ensure a memorable win for the Valencian side.

Villarreal seal comeback victory against 10-man Osasuna

Villarreal have returned to winning ways with a come-from-behind victory over Osasuna at La Ceramica. The visitors had Valentin Rosier sent off in the 40th minute, but before half time, they went ahead as Ante Budimir scored from the penalty.

But the hosts came roaring back in the second period, and goals from Georges Mikautadze and Pape Gueye ensured a win for them – which was confirmed by two massive saves from Luiz Junior late on, as he bounced back from his error against Tottenham Hotspur in the Champions League.

Alexis Sanchez fires Sevilla to second away victory in a row

Sevilla have won away from home for the second match in succession after picking up an impressive victory over Alaves at Mendizorroza. Ruben Vargas fired home an excellent opener, before Carlos Vicente equalised for the hosts from the penalty spot.

Los Nervionenses were not to be denied, and the winning goal came in the second half from substitute Alexis Sanchez, with the former Barcelona player finding the back of the net for the first time since joining from Udinese earlier this month.

Valencia see off 10-man Athletic Club at the Mestalla

Valencia bounced back from last weekend’s drubbing at Barcelona to record an impressive 1-0 victory over Athletic Club. The away side dominated the first half, and had it not been for Julen Agirrezabala, who was facing his parent club, they would have been in a commanding lead.

The tide turned when Dani Vivian was sent off on the hour mark, and just over 10 minutes later, Baptiste Santamaria scored his first Valencia goal to seal the points for Carlos Corberan’s side – and he turned provider in stoppage time as substitute Hugo Duro fired home a second for Los Che.
