Hansi Flick denies renewal agreement with Barcelona
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Barcelona manager Hansi Flick has denied reports of an agreement with the club on a contract renewal. The German coach, who is two points away from an outstanding domestic treble including the Spanish Supercup, is the flavour of the month in Catalonia.

After Flick was seen having dinner with President Joan Laporta and agent Pini Zahavi on Sunday night, in the aftermath of the celebrations following El Clasico. Subsequently, a number of reports emerged about an agreement to extend his contract.

“It’s not the time to speak about it. I said it often before, I have one more year, I’m in no hurry. We had dinner with the president and had a great time, but it was not planned or anything. I’m really happy here, as I mentioned before, but it’s not done yet. Nothing is done. We have to wait, and I can wait no problem.”

Flick focused on what is to come

Flick did entertain the idea that he may extend his deal in the summer though. The German coach did not want to hear about it before the end of the season though.

“The important thing first is to play these three games, and then we’ll talk about everything. Now isn’t the right time to think about this; there are three games before that. And today I told the team: we’re here to win games and we must focus on that. We have to respect the opponent, the club, the fans… we don’t have to think about other things. We have to be committed.”

Message for Carlo Ancelotti

Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti was announced as the next Brazil coach on Monday, and Flick had only kind words for his counterpart.

“He’s done a fantastic job in Madrid. As I said before, he’s a gentleman and one of the best coaches in the world. I wish him the best in his new role.”

Just as with his own future though, he was not to be drawn into transfer speculation and what Barcelona might do in the summer.

“I don’t think now is the time to talk about these issues.”

What agreement was being reported?

Flick currently is under contract until 2026, having signed a two-year deal on his arrival in Catalonia. The Blaugrana supposedly want to add an extra year onto that deal, taking the agreement until 2027. It has been noted that Flick is unlikely to continue in the Barcelona job long-term, and not beyond the 2026-27 season.
