Alvaro Carreras has become Real Madrid’s fourth summer signing – and his transfer is set to benefit his former club Manchester United.
The Spanish left-back has joined the La Liga giants from Benfica for a reported fee of €50m (£42.5m) and has signed a six-year contract running until June 2031. While the move strengthens Xabi Alonso’s squad, it also brings in a windfall for the Red Devils thanks to a clever clause in his previous transfer.
Manchester United to receive £4.3m from resale clause
Carreras left Old Trafford for Benfica last summer in a £5m deal, and United’s board included a 15% sell-on clause at the time. Now, with the Portuguese side having sold the 22-year-old to Real Madrid, United are entitled to 15% of the profit – amounting to around £4.3m.
With no major sales yet confirmed this summer, this unexpected income represents United’s first financial gain of the transfer window. It could be the first of several outgoing deals, with the likes of Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho continuing to be linked with moves away from Old Trafford.
