Earlier this week, Bayer Leverkusen sacked Erik ten Hag, and one of the candidates to replace him is Celta Vigo head coach Claudio Giraldez. The 37-year-old has had an excellent spell in charge at Balaidos since taking over from Rafa Benitez in March 2024, so it is no surprise that he is attracting attention.
It would be no surprise to see Celta fans concerned about Leverkusen’s interest in Giraldez, given that the Bundesliga side can offer him more money (for both himself and transfers) as well as Champions League football. However, that does not matter much to him.
Giraldez confirms he wants to sign new Celta contract
Speaking at an event at the Provincial Council of Pontevedra (via Marca), Giraldez reacted to the speculation surrounding his future, and he used the opportunity to calm the nerves of Celta supporters.
“I can reassure people because I am where I want to be. The club knows it, and in May, I was the one who spoke with the president and the sporting director with the intention of extending my relationship with the club beyond 2027, which is what we have committed to. The other thing is comments that don’t come out of me and I have little to say.”
It would be excellent news for Celta and their supporters if Giraldez did commit his future to the club via a new contract. If he continues to take the Galicians in the direction they have been travelling, there is bound to be more and more clubs that take notice of his efforts at Balaidos.
For now, it remains to be seen whether Leverkusen make an official approach to Celta regarding Giraldez, but even if it was accepted, it appears that he would not consider a move to the BayArena at this time.
