Between now and the end of next summer’s transfer window, it is expected that one or two heavyweights will leave Barcelona – and the most likely is Robert Lewandowski, who is expected to depart when his contract comes to an end in June.
Lewandowski is slowly losing prominence at Barcelona, and considering that he is now 37, the time has come for him to move on. His replacement is already being worked on, which means that attention can turn to his possible next club.
He has been linked with a move to Atletico Madrid, but there has also been rumours of Manchester United being interested in his services. However, these have been dismissed by TEAMtalk’s Dean Jones, as per CaughtOffside.
“There have been links between Man United and Robert Lewandowski but this just seems unthinkable. It does not fit with their philosophy at all, even if he is on a free transfer. I have even seen suggestions that he could act like a mentor to Sesko, which I think is extreme and probably unnecessary.
“I’m not sure how much money people think Lewandowski currently makes, but he’s basically the highest earner at Barcelona. Man United have a strict policy of how much they are going to pay players, particularly those who are older players. Yes, you need a balance and you need some experience. But even if Lewandowski was to halve his wages he would be earning more than the majority of the squad.
“I can not see them entertaining him as a signing unless he took a very radical pay cut.”
Lewandowski has a choice to make next summer
It will be very interesting to see where Lewandowski ends up once he leaves Barcelona. There will no doubt be interested from Saudi Arabia and the MLS, but it would be no surprise to see him remain in Europe for another year or two.
