Jose Mourinho clears absurd figure in redundancy packages
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

While Jose Mourinho would no doubt rather be in the job, the former Real Madrid manager will have many millions of reasons to look on the bright side after he was sacked by Fenerbahce last week. His dismissal from the Turkish giants brought up a fresh ‘milestone’ for the Portuguese  mastermind.

The 62-year-old was relieved of his duties after Fenerbahce failed to get past Benfica in the Champions League play-off, restricting them to a Europa League spot. Diario AS reference reports from Turkiye saying that in addition to missing out on the funds that come with a Champions League spot, Fenerbahce will have to front up €15m in compensation for Mourinho, even though his contract was up next summer.

Mourinho clears €100m mark in redundancy packages

Without even factoring in his not insignificant wages, Mourinho has now cleared a remarkable milestone. The Spanish daily say that he has now earned a total of €108.1m in redundancy packages. Fenerbahce are the latest to sack Mourinho, following on from AS Roma, Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea, who did so twice, while his departure from Real Madrid was termed a mutual termination.

The highest pay-off came from United, who parted, with €22m when they separated paths with Mourinho, although Chelsea account for the highest total of that €108.1m, with their two dismissals adding up to €30.5m in total.

What next for Jose Mourinho?

Mourinho had only ever been dismissed from the Chelsea job in 2007 when he arrived at the Bernabeu, but since leaving Real Madrid, has never left of his own accord, albeit this is the norm for most managers. Mourinho emerged as a surprise candidate to return to the Bernabeu in 2023, when Carlo Ancelotti’s job was in jeopardy.

There are still those that hold Mourinho in high regard, but at the age of 62, he has dropped hints that he would like to manage the Portuguese national team at some point. Still enjoying idol status in his home country, Roberto Martinez will no doubt feel the chill of his shadow if things go poorly in the 2026 World Cup.
