Liverpool keeping tabs on this Barcelona defender

Despite having a comprehensive 11-point lead over Arsenal with 7 league games remaining, Liverpool were exposed defensively against Fulham in a disastrous 3-2 defeat at Craven Cottage. They must make reinforcements across the backline, and according to Spanish outlet Relevo, versatile Barcelona defender Ronald Araujo has emerged as a transfer target amid Virgil van Dijk’s contract conundrum.

The 26-year-old Uruguay international spent academy years with Huracán de Rivera and Rentistas before breaking into the latter’s first-team squad. During his stint with Rentistas, Araujo switched his position from attack to defence and eventually joined top-tier Uruguayan outfit Boston River for €395k.

Impressed by his composure as a centre-half, Barcelona snapped him up for €1.7m (plus €3.5m on variables) in the summer of 2018. There he secured a first-team status after spending two years with the reserves, and so far, the Blaugrana star has appeared 165 times for them in all competitions. Although persistent injury problems prevented him from featuring more frequently, he is rated highly by Hansi Flick, and therefore, convinced him to pen a new contract in January.

Meanwhile, the centre-back has a €65m buyout clause in the summer, which will increase to €80m in the next transfer window. His suitors could trigger the same to secure his services, and the Catalans’ interest in Luis Diaz could bolster Liverpool’s chances.

Barca sporting director Deco played a crucial role in tying Araujo down till 2031. He is also fond of Diaz, who could challenge and cover Raphinha down the left. And Liverpool, considering they have Cody Gakpo in their ranks, could involve the Colombian in a swap deal.

Why Liverpool Should Consider A Move For The Barcelona Ace

The Merseysiders have four central defensive options in skipper Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate, Joe Gomez and Jarell Quansah. While they have yet to sort out the Dutchman’s contract beyond this season, Konate’s indecision to sign an extension might force the Reds to make a call during the summer window.

Gomez has been sidelined for months due to fitness reasons, and Quansah, being the fourth-choice centre-half, has been deployed sporadically by Arne Slot. He is not ready to secure a regular role, and the gaffer was even forced to play Wataru Endo as a makeshift defender to manage the minutes of the first-team stars.

Araujo’s availability all season remains a concern, but his passing traits, ball-playing ability, and command make him a perfect fit for Slot’s system. Liverpool must accelerate their transition with several key exits on the cards, and the arrival of La Celeste star could be the start of a new chapter.
