Pau Cubarsi points finger at area responsible poor defending

Barcelona defender Pau Cubarsi has pointed the finger at the team’s forwards for their increasingly leaky defence. It was another bad day for the Blaugrana backline, who conceded four goals against Sevilla in a damning defeat.

Their defeat made it two losses in a row for the first time under Hansi Flick, and took their goals conceded total to 12 in just 10 games this season. As the international break begins, so has the inquest at Barcelona.

‘We didn’t come out with the right intensity’ – Cubarsi

In line with Pedri’s words after the game, defender Pau Cubarsi criticised the Barcelona side, and  not for the first time, for lacking intensity.

“We’re leaving with a rather bad feeling. I think they overpowered us in the first half and we didn’t come out with the intensity this pitch demands. We improved in the second half, but we lacked precision in front of goal, and they were unforgiving,” he told MD.

Flick had been positive about Barcelona’s reaction in the second half in his post-match press duties.

“In the second half, we had some really good chances. I think we could have even taken the lead. Football is like that, sometimes we score and sometimes we don’t. After that, we can’t let ourselves go like that, and that’s why we got four goals.”

However beyond the intensity, Cubarsi also noted that he felt the attacking stars up front were not putting in their shift defensively.

“We didn’t come out with the intensity that the game required, we came out asleep and there are no excuses, it’s our fault, we have to improve on things that we lacked.”

“These chances now start from up front and we have to start pressing again like last season, we have relaxed and this can’t be the case, we can’t throw the baby out with the bath water, but it has to be a turning point.”

Barça’s 4-1 loss at Sevilla exposed several issues. Flick’s high defensive line looks shaky without Iñigo Martínez, and the team showed fatigue and low intensity. The coach’s slow reactions and predictable tactics are giving rivals an edge. Questionable refereeing didn’t help,…

Cubarsi did then soften his tone, noting that there was no need to go overboard.

“The feeling in the league had been good. I don’t think we should overreact on this pitch, but we can’t drop points like this. We have to look to the future and improve on the mistakes we made.”

After the international break, Barcelona host Girona and Olympiakos, before traveling to the Santiago Bernabeu to face Real Madrid. By that point, the Barcelona defence will need to find solutions.
