Marcus Rashford “does not deserve” a transfer to Barcelona after requesting a move from Manchester United, according to former Red Devils striker Teddy Sheringham.
Rashford is one of five wantaway players currently training away from Ruben Amorim’s squad, alongside Jadon Sancho, Alejandro Garnacho, Antony and Tyrell Malacia.
He joined Aston Villa on loan in January and initially made a positive impact, finishing the campaign with four goals and five assists in 17 appearances across all competitions.
However, Villa opted against exercising an option to make his stay permanent for £40m, with Rashford’s huge wages – believed to be around £325,000 per week – proving a stumbling block.
The 27-year-old has been linked with another loan move ahead of 2025-26, with Barcelona reportedly interested following their failure to land Nico Williams from Athletic Bilbao.
But Sheringham – a treble winner with United in 1998-99 – believes Rashford should not be making an upwards move given his issues at Old Trafford.
“If you assess where Marcus Rashford is at, you strive as a youngster to get to the very top and play for clubs like Manchester United, and when you’re there, you appreciate it,” Sheringham told Sky Bet.
“You don’t throw it away and say you want to leave. I find the whole episode very soul-destroying, compared to the way I was back in the day and how I strove to get the privilege to play for such a huge football club.

“I didn’t like Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang doing that at Arsenal. I thought it was soul-destroying, and I hope Rashford doesn’t get the move that he’s hankering for.
“From my perspective, if you go from Manchester United to Barcelona, that’s a step up that he hasn’t deserved.”
Amorim’s predecessor, Erik ten Hag, publicly reprimanded Rashford on multiple occasions during his time at the club.
In January, Amorim then declared Rashford must change his approach to training if he wished to remain part of his plans.
The United boss memorably said he would rather select his 63-year-old goalkeeping coach, Jorge Vita,l over Rashford, accusing the forward of not giving “the maximum”.
Rashford has struggled for form since 2022-23, when he scored 30 goals in all competitions as United finished third in the Premier League and won the EFL Cup.
Rashford only scored eight goals in 43 matches in 2023-24, then netted 11 times last season, though four of those goals came in a Villa shirt.
