Real Betis vs. Chelsea: Head-to-head record and past meetings before Conference League final
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Ahead of Wednesday’s Conference League clash between Betis and Chelsea, Sports Mole looks at the head-to-head record and previous meetings between the two clubs.

Chelsea will win European trophy number nine or Real Betis will win continental honour number one in Wroclaw on Wednesday evening, as the Blues and the Verdiblancos battle it out in the 2024-25 Conference League final.

Enzo Maresca’s side have already booked a ticket to the Champions League thanks to their fourth-placed Premier League finish, and they strolled past Djurgardens IF 5-1 on aggregate in the semi-finals of the Conference League.

Meanwhile, Betis came up trumps in a thrilling last-four battle with Fiorentina, prevailing 4-3 on aggregate to reach their first-ever European final under the wing of Manuel Pellegrini.

Here, Sports Mole takes an in-depth look at the head-to-head record and previous meetings between the two sides.

The 2024-25 Conference League marks the third different European competition that Real Betis and Chelsea will meet in, as the two sides have also collided in the Champions League and Cup Winners’ Cup.

Unsurprisingly, Chelsea hold the bragging rights in the head-to-head column, triumphing on three occasions compared to just the one for Betis, and there has never been a stalemate between the two sides.

Prior to the most recent Conference League, the Blues and the Verdiblancos last crossed paths during the group stage of the 2005-06 Champions League, where Betis overcame the London club for the first time in their history.

The La Liga outfit won 1-0 in November 2005 thanks to a goal from Dani – who scored the winner just three minutes after coming off the bench to replace an injured teammate – but Betis were taught a footballing lesson at Stamford Bridge a couple of weeks before.

Indeed, Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea thumped Los Verdiblancos 4-0 in the English capital in October 2005, as Didier Drogba, Ricardo Carvalho, Joe Cole and Hernan Crespo all helped themselves to goals.

That four-goal thumping marked Chelsea’s third successive victory against their Spanish counterparts, whom they also bested 5-2 over two legs during the quarter-finals of the 1997-98 UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup.

The inaugural meeting came at La Cartuja, where two goals from Tore Andre Flo propelled Chelsea to a 2-1 first-leg win away from home, and Gianluca Vialli’s men completed the job at home two weeks later.

Finidi George managed to draw Betis level on aggregate, but the Blues responded through Frank Sinclair, Roberto Di Matteo and Gianfranco Zola before going on to beat Stuttgart in the final.
