According to German outlet Bild, Liverpool and Real Madrid are both interested in signing Dayot Upamecano from Bayern Munich as a free agent when his contract with the Bundesliga champions expires next summer.
Real Madrid are looking to reinforce their defensive line with a high-quality centre-back, while Liverpool’s situation, already complicated by the failure to sign Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace at the start of September, has become more urgent as Giovanni Leoni, a teenager recently brought in from Parma, suffered an ACL injury on his club debut in the Carabao Cup against Southampton this week.
Much will presumably depend on what happens with Ibrahima Konate, whose contract with Liverpool also expires at the end of the season and who is also under observation from Real Madrid. It seems both clubs consider Upamecano as an alternative for his France teammate; Real as a potential target, Liverpool as a direct replacement for the player who has been a defensive stalwart next to Virgil van Dijk for several years.
