Real Madrid registering name change of iconic stadium – Football España

The iconic Estadio Santiago Bernabeu is no more. Real Madrid have decided to alter the name of the ground they have called home since 1947.

According to Marca, Real Madrid have to all intents and purposes shortened the name to just ‘Bernabeu’. The name of the stadium on social media, and in commercial terms has been altered to not include ‘Santiago’, including the website of the stadium itself. Originally denominated Estadio Nuevo Chamartin, the stadium then took on the name of the then President Santiago Bernabeu, who was a former player and president for 35 years betwen 1943 and 1978. He is also credited by starting off their glorious run of success in the late 1950s and early 1960s that made the club what they are today.

The Bernabeu, which was renovated and completed in 2024, has faced no shortage of problems, with legal challenges impacting their plans to host concerts and also to build an underground carpark linked to the stadium. Real Madrid President Florentino Perez has described it as a money-making motor for the club going forward though. Next year it is set to host Spain’s first NFL game.
