Seven from Barca, two from Real Madrid: De la Fuente’s Spain

Seven Barcelona players have been named in the Spain squad for the September internationals with Bulgaria and Turkey, but there are only two representatives from Real Madrid.

Spain will be aiming to make the perfect start to their 2026 World Cup qualification campaign when they meet Bulgaria on September 4, before taking on Turkey three days later.

There are seven representatives from Barcelona, with Pau Cubarsi, Pedri, Gavi, Fermin Lopez, Ferran Torres, Dani Olmo and Lamine Yamal all selected in the squad.

However, Joan Garcia and Alejandro Balde have been left out, with the Barcelona duo having work to do in order to be in consideration for a spot in the squad for the 2026 World Cup.

Dani Carvajal is fit again after a lengthy absence, and he is one of two Real Madrid players included, with summer arrival Dean Huijsen also selected by head coach Luis de la Fuente.

Yamal, Pedri among Barca stars in Spain squad

There is only one new face in the squad, with 19-year-old Jesus Rodriguez selected for the first time, and it will be fascinating to see whether the Como attacker is given minutes.

Alvaro Morata also keeps his spot, as does Mikel Oyarzabal, while Yeremy Pino is included, as he prepares to make the move to Crystal Palace from Villarreal.

Marcos Llorente and Pablo Barrios are notable absentees, while Isco and Alex Baena are injured, but Samu Aghehowa has been overlooked despite his excellent form for Porto last season.

Joan Garcia faces a major battle to break into the set-up even if he enjoys a strong campaign at Barcelona, with Unai Simon and David Raya favourites of De la Fuente, while Real Sociedad’s Alex Remiro is seen as an excellent number three.

It is a similar story for Balde at left-back, with Chelsea’s Marc Cucurella ahead of him in the pecking order, while the same can also be said for Bayer Leverkusen’s Alex Grimaldo.

Spain will tackle Bulgaria and Turkey next month before playing twice more in October against Georgia and Bulgaria, and it would be a shock if they were unable to book their spot at next summer’s competition.

Spain squad in full:

Goalkeepers: Unai Simon (Athletic Bilbao), David Raya (Arsenal), Alex Remiro (Real Sociedad)

Defenders: Dani Carvajal (Real Madrid), Pedro Porro (Tottenham), Robin Le Normand (Atletico Madrid), Dean Huijsen (Real Madrid), Dani Vivian (Athletic Bilbao), Pau Cubarsi (Barcelona), Marc Cucurella (Chelsea), Alex Grimaldo (Bayer Leverkusen)

Midfielders: Rodri (Man City), Martin Zubimendi (Arsenal), Fabian Ruiz (PSG), Pedri (Barcelona), Mikel Merino (Arsenal), Gavi (Barcelona), Fermín Lopez (Barcelona)

Forwards: Alvaro Morata (Como), Mikel Oyarzabal (Real Sociedad), Ferran Torres (Barcelona), Dani Olmo (Barcelona), Lamine Yamal (Barcelona), Nico Williams (Athletic Bilbao), Yeremy Pino (Villarreal), Jesus Rodriguez (Como)
