UEFA have settled on the venue for the 2027 Champions League final, with the event returning to Spain after eight years. As expected, UEFA have decided that it will be the Metropolitano that hosts the final next season.
It has been reported on several occasions that the Metropolitano was in the running for and the favourite to host the 2027 event. After a meeting of the UEFA Executive Committee, Marca say that the Metropolitano has beaten out the Olympic Stadium in Baku, Azerbaijan, to host the event. San Siro in Milan was discarded earlier.
Sixth European final in Madrid
It sees the Champions League final return to Spain after eight years away, when the Metropolitano, then just two years into its new life, hosted Liverpool’s win over Tottenham Hotspur. It is the sixth Champions League final to be held in Madrid, after the Santiago Bernabeu hosted the event in 1957, 1969, 1980 and 2010.
The women’s final for 2027 will be held in Warsaw, Poland, and this year’s men’s event takes place in the Puskas Arena in Budapest, Hungary.
The Metropolitano is the final result of a major construction, but leading the way in a major overhaul of Spanish stadia in the lead up to the 2030 World Cup. The Santiago Bernabeu is still putting the finishing touches to work on the stadium, while Camp Nou, the Benito Villamarin, La Romareda and Balaidos are all undergoing work currently.

UEFA to consult on USA game
Earlier this week it was reported that UEFA would not stand in the way of La Liga’s plans to host Villarreal-Barcelona in Miami, USA, in December, after their evaluation was that they had no legal basis to do so. The Italian Football Federation (FIGC) are also intending on holding a Como-AC Milan clash in Australia this season.
However the conclusion was that they wanted to hear out all sections of the game, and would consult all of the interested parties on the matter, including ‘the fans’. It is not stated how that will take place, or whether they will be local fans of the teams in question.
