Who are the best Atletico Madrid players right now? – LaLiga Expert
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Until very recently, Atletico Madrid’s season was full of promise, with a squad that was boosted significantly last summer competing well on three fronts. If they do end up without silverware, Diego Simeone will be disappointed, but can take encouragement from many of the things he has seen from his Atletico Madrid players during the 2024/25 season.

Below, we’ve ranked the best Atletico Madrid players according to their average scores out of 100 on Sorare’s scoring matrix. This takes into account a range of actions, including key contributions such as goals, assists and last man tackles, as well smaller actions such as progressive passes, dribbles and interceptions.

To feature, players in the Atletico Madrid squad must have appeared in at least 50% of their eligible games within the specified time-frame. LaLiga, Champions League and most international appearances all contribute to the average scores.

Atletico Madrid best players 2024/25 – Ranked by their Sorare average scores (Last 15 matches)

5. Giuliano Simeone – 51.5

One of the big positives for the Atleti boss this season, on a personal and professional level, has been the rapid development of his own son Giuliano. Only really seen as a back-up option at the start of the campaign, the 22-year-old is now one of the first names on the teamsheet, operating on the right flank in a typical 4-4-2 Atletico Madrid formation.

Mirroring his father’s work-rate and energy levels, Giuliano has also chipped in with five assists and one goal in LaLiga 2024/25, and he has very quickly quashed any suggestions of nepotism with some lively displays.

While it’s true that Simeone may lack the natural technical talent of some of the best players in the Spanish top flight, he still has plenty of time to develop his game, and he has already been rewarded with international caps for Argentina.

4. Jan Oblak – 54.1

Having recently passed a decade as Atletico Madrid’s number one, Jan Oblak remains one of the most impressive goalkeepers in LaLiga. Aided by having a defensively-minded boss, the Slovenian is already the joint record holder with five Zamora Trophy wins, and he’s in a strong position to move clear of Victor Valdes and Antoni Ramallets by claiming his sixth title this term.

Oblak was widely regarded as one of the best goalkeepers in the world a few seasons ago, although he did have one or two slightly less convincing campaigns which saw his stock fall a little.

There has never been any real prospect of Oblak losing his place at the Estadio Metropolitano though, and at the time of writing, he has the highest save percentage (78.0%) of any keeper who has started more than once in LaLiga this term.

3. Conor Gallagher – 55.2

Along with Julian Alvarez, Robin Le Normand and Alexander Sorloth, Conor Gallagher formed part of a quartet of major signings that Los Rojiblancos made last summer.

Not dissimilar to Giuliano Simeone, Gallagher’s ability to run all day and provide high intensity pressing, in theory made him a natural fit for this Atletico Madrid side, and the Englishman has been a big hit with the fans.

While he has faced competition from Samuel Lino for a start on the left flank, and hasn’t always been a starter, Gallagher will be relatively happy with his efforts in his first season in Spain. He was a scorer in the Champions League derby against Real Madrid in March and the ex-Chelsea midfielder will be hoping to nail down a regular starting berth next term.

2. Julian Alvarez – 59.0

Another player to swap the Premier League for LaLiga last year was Julian Alvarez, and he has slightly more reason to believe he made the right call.

Having largely lived in Erling Haaland’s shadow at Manchester City, the Argentine has settled quickly in the Spanish capital and established himself as the primary goal threat amongst the Atletico Madrid forwards, good going given he has significant competition from Sorloth and Antonie Griezmann.

With 24 goals in all competitions for his new club already, Alvarez is only a strong end to the campaign away from hitting 30 in his debut season with Atleti, and he brings plenty more to the table than just goals.

1. Marcos Llorente – 59.8

Statistically speaking, Marcos Llorente has been the most consistent performer this term for Los Rojiblancos, and that’s despite mostly being used as a right-back which isn’t his natural position.

Another player with deep lungs, Llorente still manages to get into some very advanced areas and he has chipped in with five goals in all competitions. His Champions League numbers were particularly impressive with two goals and four assists in eight appearances in the competition.

He ranks first of all the Atletico players over the past 15 games, but that is only really a continuation of his early season form which was also very good. While the level of one or two of his teammates, perhaps most notably Griezmann, has dropped off, there has been no decline from Llorente and the only dilemma for his coach remains deciding where best to utilise the 30-year-old.

According to Soraredata’s records for the last 40 matches, Llorente also ranks as Atletico Madrid’s best player in the 2024/25 season.

Griezmann, who will surely go down as one of the all-time Atletico Madrid legends runs him a close second, with the Frenchman excellent in the first half of the season, but not at his best in recent months.

The current starting Atletico Madrid midfielders of Rodrigo De Paul and Pablo Barrios also rank in the top 10, along with Sorloth who has still scored at a healthy rate, despite mostly being used off the bench.

Jose Maria Gimenez has posted the best figures among the club’s central defensive options this term, but he’s only eighth on the list of the best Atletico players over the past 40 games according to Sorare.
