Wolverhampton Wanderers are reportedly close to selling Goncalo Guedes to a La Liga club in what would represent a major boost to the club’s transfer plans.
Wolverhampton Wanderers are reportedly close to facilitating the permanent exit of Goncalo Guedes.
When Wolves paid £27.5m for the Portugal international in 2022, the expectation was that the ex-Valencia star would become a key player at Molineux.
Instead, the 28-year-old failed to settle at the Premier League club and has instead spent three loan periods away at Benfica (twice) and Villarreal.
Although Guedes spent the 2024-25 campaign at Wolves, he was limited to 10 starts and 19 substitute outings in England’s top flight, his last goal or assist coming in Vitor Pereira’s first game against Leicester City on December 22.
While Guedes has earned game time during pre-season, it has been widely understood that the club could cash in on his services for the right price.
La Liga club pushing for Guedes signing
According to Record, an agreement is close with Real Sociedad and a deal is eventually expected to be finalised.
A separate report from journalist Matteo Moretto says that “contacts” are due to be held between the relevant parties to determine whether a transfer is likely.
Real Sociedad could undertake somewhat of a rebuilding job having missed out on European football for 2025-26 and sold star man Martin Zubimendi to Arsenal.
Only Mikel Oyarzabal, with nine goals and three assists, came out of last season with any credit in the final third, and reinforcements are required.
Guedes’ best football of his career has come in La Liga, a total of 31 goals and 30 assists being recorded in 163 matches for Valencia and Villarreal.
The catalyst for more Wolves signings?
Wolves have been at the point where they should be making signings for some time given the amount of players that have left since the end of May.
Seven players from last season’s first-team squad – Nelson Semedo, Nasser Djiga, Rayan Ait-Nouri, Boubacar Traore, Tommy Doyle, Pabo Sarabia and Matheus Cunha – have either left on a permanent or temporary basis.
Only Fer Lopez and Jhon Arias have been added to the squad, although Ki-Jana Hoever and Hugo Bueno will seemingly be reintegrated into the senior ranks.
Nevertheless, Pereira is short on numbers and realistically requires a new right wing-back, left wing-back, central midfielder and backup central forward to feel comfortable about his options.
