Real Madrid continued their 100% start to this season’s Champions League with a narrow 1-0 victory over Juventus on Wednesday. It was far from a straightforward evening for the hosts, but in the end, they got the win they desired.
As per Diario AS, head coach Xabi Alonso gave his thoughts on the clash at the Santiago Bernabeu when speaking to the media post-match. He admitted that his side did not start well, but they got better as the game went on.
“There have been different phases. We went from less to more, we didn’t start well, but we adjusted. We had more of the ball and we increased the pace. It allowed us to have chances. I told them that it was a game of work, of looking for one, of not losing the balance. And so it has been.
“Vini made a great move. We couldn’t kill them off, but we leave with three points. Courtois has also been very good. Let’s continue.”
Alonso also spoke on Jude Bellingham, who notched his first goal of the season – which also turned out to be the only goal of the game.
“We need everyone. I’m very happy for Jude. After the injury he needed a good game. Apart from the goal he played very well, in intermediate positions. We found him very well in the second half. I’m very happy for him.”
Alonso reacts to defensive vulnerabilities
Alonso was also asked about Real Madrid’s openness, with their defenders having been left exposed on multiple occasions throughout the 90 minutes.
“There are many points. We improve week by week. They caught us in some transition, because we wanted to be aggressive in the opponent’s half.
“That play… As a spectator it has been a spectacle. I prayed that they wouldn’t send (Militao) off, and then there was Thibaut…”
